music monday: "kill" by jimmy eat world

This is one of my favorite songs. The lyrics completely wreck me. Even if I'm in the best mood before I listen to this song, afterward, I might be angry and sad and want to break something and then put it back together again. That might not make you want to listen to the song, but somehow I'm drawn to sad, complex songs like this.

With two verses, three different choruses and a killer bridge, Jimmy had a lot to say here! I love hearing about songs that the artist felt was inside him just dying to get out, and this song seems like one of them.

The entire album (Futures, 2004) is absolutely amazing and I can listen to it from beginning to end without wanting to skip a single track, but this song is definitely my favorite

teacher for lyfe

I started my new job as a tutor last night, and it was legendary. I haven't taught or even interacted with kids on a regular basis since June of 2009, and it filled my heart to see this student succeed and be so proud of her work!

Teaching is all I ever remember wanting to do (I made worksheets for my friends when I was six!), but I still had that itch -- I didn't think I'd be able to do it for very long and I desperately wanted to try something else. But now that I feel this immense satisfaction and wholeness after one 60-minute tutoring session, maybe I was right all along. Maybe teaching is something I could do for the rest of my life, or at least for a long while.

stadium food law

There's Murphy's Law and...some other laws. Cyrus and I went to a Red Sox game last week and was a victim of Stadium Food Law.

Here's what it is: The popcorn guy (or Italian ice guy, pizza guy, whatever) at the stadium walks by you a zillion times in 30 minutes. After the zillionth time, you realize you want popcorn/Italian ice/peanuts/whatever. You get your money ready and you're craning your neck to see if you can see him. You wait. And wait. Any minute now... And then he never comes back until like an hour later when you've pretty much given up hope.

Has anyone else experienced Stadium Food Law?

music monday: top 10

What are your top 10 most played songs on your music player?

I was surprised to see only three artists in my top 10:
  1. "The Way I Am," Ingrid Michaelson
  2. "'Til I See You," Hillsong United
  3. "With Everything," Hillsong United
  4. "That's What You Get," Paramore
  5. "Hallelujah," Paramore
  6. "Tear Down the Walls," Hillsong United
  7. "When It Rains," Paramore
  8. "Salvation Is Here," Hillsong United
  9. "Hosanna," Hillsong United
  10. "Saviour King," Hillsong United
Wow. Do I really listen to Paramore and Hillsong that much?

What are your top 10?

crazy day

I had the craziest day yesterday!

I woke up at 4:00am from a scary and stressful dream! I was out of breath!

I woke up at 6:30am from a hilarious dream! I woke up laughing!

I was trying to make it to my 10am interview/training in Dorchester when I realized that our car had been towed!

I got there and couldn't find the place!

When I finally got there, I had to use the bathroom! Right away!

I realized that I'd forgotten my passport to complete my I9 form!

I didn't realize how long the training would be and by 2pm I was staaahving!

After the training, I walked in the opposite direction of the T stop to go to a cafe to realize that it had JUST closed!

...and that's about it.

failures

I've been thinking a lot about my failures today, thanks to the essay portion of my New York City Public School application. I have to write about a hardship I've encountered in my professional or academic career that I've overcome, how I overcame it, and how I would apply these lessons in the classroom.

So I brainstormed and wrote down the ideas I had, and now I have a full single-spaced typed page of all the professional and academic failures I can remember, and it's making me a little sad!

I want ice cream.

(I wrote this on Thursday evening.)
